Three HM militants arrested; Junaid Sehrai their mentor: SSP Srinagar

Srinagar: Police on Tuesday said that Junaid Sehrai, son of pro-freedom leader Muhammad Ashraf Sehrai was the main mentor of the youth who were about to join militant ranks and were arrested by district police Srinagar.

Senior Superintendent of Police (SSP) Srinagar, Dr Haseeb Mughal while addressing a presser said that three youth have been arrested who were about to join militant ranks here. “The trio was given a task, which was a test for them before joining militant ranks. They were asked to reach Jammu with a grenade which they lobbed there and also attack Special Police Officer (SPO) identified as Ruman Raiees at Barzulla. They were asked to fire upon the SPO but were also asked that he should not be killed,” SSP informed.

He added that Junaid Sehrai is their mentor. “We can’t divulge the whole developments that came to fore during the investigations. We feel happy that we stopped the youth from joining militancy,” the SSP said.

Mughal said that Asif Ahmad, one among the trio was being followed from last several days, as he was more ‘radicalized.’ “We came to know that he has left home a few days back and is in Pulwama. The family later filed a missing report in this regard but when we tried to trace him, he returned to his home,” he said.

He added that many sensational things came to fore including actual radicalization and how youth join militancy, how they get information and other things during detailed investigation.

Meanwhile, Police in a statement said Srinagar Police arrested three Hizb-ul-Mujahideen militants, who were involved in firing on SPO Romaan at Chanapora and several grenade throwing incidents and other cases in Srinagar and Jammu cities.

They have been identified as Asif Iqbal Dar and Shahid Hassan Dar of Soura and Rasheed Lateef Mir of Barzulla.

They were affiliated with HM and were wanted by law for their complicity in a series of terror crimes. The arrests were made after series of human and technical investigative techniques used by Police, police said.

“As per police records, the trio had history of terror crime records and were involved in planning and executing several terror crimes in J&K along with their terror associates. During investigation it was learnt that Junaid Sehrai commander of HM was part of this group which carried out these attacks. They were involved in attack on SPO Romaan at Chanapora on 27/3/2019 in which he sustained injuries besides grenade throwing incidents in Jammu and Srinagar,” police said.

Police added that incriminating materials including ammunition, live rounds were recovered from their possession. “A case under relevant sections of law has been registered in this regard. Further investigation in the matter is going on,” police added.
