Water scarcity irks protest outside DC office in Shopian

Shopian, July 21: Large number of women with empty vessels blocked the road outside District Development Office here in South Kashmir’s Shopian district on Tuesday morning for not getting drinking water supply.

These women who hail from Shaksaaz Mohalla Pinjura area of Shopian said that it has become a routine for them now to consume contaminated water from nallahs.

Some of the women were seen bursting in tears ruing their fate. “I have no energy now to fetch water from far flung areas for my family. I have got fed up with this process. It is very cumbersome for us to get drinking water,” Saleema Bano said.

One of the protesting women said that the problem in the village persists from past 30 years. “Only promises were made by politicians and officers, but those promises turn hollow,” she said.

The officials rushed to spot and pacified the protesting women. “District Development Commissioner has taken cognizance of the protest and directed concerned department to ensure water supply to the concerned village,” an official told KNT.
