Delhi: A Hindu-Muslim couple was humiliated by a passport officer in Lucknow by refusing to accept their marriage and asking the man, who was a Muslim, to convert to Hinduism, The Indian Expres reported.

Following the incident the couple, later, took to Twitter to convey their ordeal to Ministry of External Affairs (MEA) head Sushma Swaraj and the Prime Minister’s Office and asked them to intervene in the matter.

Mohammad Anas Siddiqui and Tanvi Seth, married for 11 years now applied for their passports on June 19 and took an appointment for the next day at Lucknow’s Passport Office.

On the day of the appointment, the couple had successfully cleared the first two stages of the interview. However, the problem began at the third stage, media reports said.

Anas, the husband told the news channel that an officer named Vikas Mishra shouted at his wife for having married him after going through their documents, reports further said.

The officer, then asked the woman to get all the documents corrected with a changed name.

“My wife, Tanvi, said that we don’t want to change the name and our family doesn’t have a problem with our names,” Anas told the news channel. The officer then asked Anas to take the ‘pheras’ and get converted to Hinduism.
