Transporters protest in Srinagar, demand registration of vehicles

Srinagar, Jun 01: Scores of transporters on Wednesday staged a protest at Srinagar’s press enclave against the frequent challans and demanded registration of their vehicles.

The protesters said that “we have bought vehicles from outside and unfortunately our vehicles are not being registered since long and as a result of which, we are being frequently challaned by the traffic cops.”

“We have been trying every bid to get our vehicles registered and particularly from last four to five months, but the officials at the Regional Transport Office (RTO) here are refusing to register their vehicles in wake of the ongoing case regarding the matter at the court,” the transporters said, adding that they are being fined almost on regular basis and even one of the driver has been fined Rs 20,000 a few days back by SSP.

“We are already facing financial losses from 2019 and can’t afford more losses anymore,” the transporters said and alleged that the transporters from Jammu got their vehicles registered after paying tax of Rs 12000 but “despite paying Rs 50,000 tax, we are being pushed to the wall.”

“RTO Kashmir has asked us to complete the document related process till the court issues any order but the fine at the same time is being imposed on us. Therefore, in such a situation, the authorities should assist the transporters at this juncture so that they could heave a sigh of relief,” they said.kno
