Four Killed, 24 Injured As Bus Catches Fire In Katra

Jammu, May 13: Four people were killed and 24 others injured when a passenger bus they were travelling in caught fire under mysterious circumstances in Katra area of Reasi district on Friday, officials said.

The bus, on its way to Jammu from Katra, caught fire near Kharmal which is just little over 3 kilometers from Katra, they said.

“The incident happened at around 4 p.m. The bus was going from Jammu to Katra. While it was going, there was fire. The reason (s) for the fire have not found concretely so far,” Additional Director General (ADG) of Police, Jammu zone, Mukesh Singh told reporters. “Initial investigations have not so far yielded concrete reason(s),” he said, adding, “Four people were killed and 24 others are injured.”

He said those injured where questioned as regards the circumstances. “Further investigations are underway. Passengers are under treatment and initially as everyone in a state of shock. Once they get better, investigation will be carried further.”

Asked if preliminary investigation suggest any blast etc, the ADGP said: “The site of examination did not allude to blast but investigations are in preliminary stage,” he said, adding, “Since the investigation is still going on nothing can be said precisely.”

Meanwhile ADGP went to GMC Jammu and enquired about the well-being of injured persons. He wished for the speedy recovery of the injured persons. The ADGP Jammu also visited and inspected the place of incident at Kharmal Katra. “The officers briefed at the spot regarding the incident.”

Meanwhile, Lieutenant Governor, Manoj Sinha announced an ex-gratia of Rs 5 lakh each for the Next of Kin of those who have lost their lives in the tragic bus “incident” in Katra.

The Lt Governor expressed grief over the unfortunate incident and directed the district administration to ensure the best possible treatment to the injured.

“Extremely pained by the loss of lives in the tragic bus incident in Katra. I offer my deepest condolences to the bereaved families and prayers for the speedy recovery of the injured”, the Lt Governor said.gns
