Srinagar, Feb 5: Clashes erupted between stonepelters and police after congregational Friday prayers outside Historic Jamia Masjid in Downtown area of Central Kashmir’s Srinagar city.

Eye witnesses said that youth assembled near Jamia Masjid and shouted pro-freedom slogans. They said that the forces restored to teargas shelling to disperse them.

A passerby woman was also received head injury in the stone pelting as she was hit directly hit on head by a stone.

The stone pelting incident came to be been seen as a reaction against the continuous detention of the APHC chairman and head priest of Kashmir Mirwaiz Umar Farooq.

Meanwhile, there was less movement of people and transport in the entire area due to the stone pelting incident.

It is pertinent to mention that Hurriyat Conference (M) on Friday “regretted” that the government “went back on their decision” and placed the APHC chairman Mirwaiz Umar Farooq under house detention again.

It may be recalled that only two days ago the senior police official had confirmed that Mirwaiz has been released from his 20th month long house detention.

In a statement issued to CNS, the Hurriyat expressed strong resentment and regret that after announcing the release of its chairman and Mirwaiz e Kashmir Molvi Umar Farooq from twenty month long house detention since August 2019, Government authorities went back on their decision of detaining him on one or the other pretext. cns
