Landslide damages 15 shops, 3 houses in Central Kashmir

Ganderbal, July 17: Property worth lakhs were destroyed after land caved in a Kangan village of Central Kashmir’s Ganderbal district.

Official sources said that there was a landslide while earth caved in as well damaging shops and houses in Gonibagh area of Kangan on Srinagar-Leh Highway. Due to landslide, Srinagar-Leh road was closed.

The landslide occurred during wee hours on Friday. Eyewitnesses said that a large number of trees were also destroyed in the landslide.

Sub-Divisional Magistrate (SDM) Kangan, Hakim Tanvir said that earth caved in after there was a landslide in Gonibagh area, 7 kilometers away from Kangan town. He said that 15 shops and 3 houses suffered damages in the incident.

The SDM said that fortunately there was no loss of life in the incident. “Men and machinery have been pressed into service to clear the debris. Road will be thrown open shortly,” he added. (KNT)
