Contractual teachers protest in Srinagar, demand continuation of services

Srinagar: Scores of disengaged contractual teachers, including females, from different parts of Kashmir valley continued their sit-in protest on Tuesday in the summer capital, Srinagar, demanding continuation of their services.

Despite hot and humid weather, the sit-in protest by scores of disengaged contractual teachers entered 17th day on Tuesday at Partab Park opposite Press Enclave in Srinagar.

The protesting teachers, who have come from different parts of the valley, are demanding continuation of their services.

Holding placards, which read ‘Continue our services’, ‘Regularize our services’, the protesting teachers threatened to hit the streets and intensify their demonstration if their demands were not fulfilled. “After the authorities gave them multiple extensions in the past they were abruptly disengaged in mid-session on May 10, leaving them without livelihood,” they said.

“We are 1200 teachers who were engaged by the government as contractual teachers. We have been sitting on a protest in this park from last 17 days to demand continuation of our services like it was done in 2006,” the demonstrators said.

They said they are demanding continuation of services as it was promised to them by the state government. “We have also given a written memorandum to the Governor (Satya Pal Malik) about the same,” they said.

The protesting teachers said they are hopeful that their demands will be fulfilled as soon as possible.

However, the teachers said that they will hit the streets and intensify the protests if their demands were not fulfilled.

“If our demands were not fulfilled before Eid, we will not celebrate the festival and continue the protest. We will hit the streets and government will be responsible for any law and order problem,” they added.
