In assembly Mehbooba ruled out revoking AFSPA, she is lying now: Omar Abdullah

Srinagar: Former Jammu and Kashmir chief minister Omar Abdullah Thursday lashed out at BJP President Amit Shah and Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) over AFSPA and said that PDP has no intention of doing anything with AFSPA & BJP didn’t break the coalition because of AFSPA.

Taking to social networking site Twitter Omar wrote: “Why are @AmitShah & the PDP lying to people about AFSPA? PDP has no intention of doing anything with AFSPA & BJP didn’t break the coalition because of AFSPA. This is from Ms Mufti’s Assembly speech as CM in Feb 2018, just a few months before the BJP unceremoniously dismissed our elected CM via a phone call from the Governor.”

Mehbooba Mufti as chief minister of the state on February 2, 2018 ruled out revoking the controversial Armed Forces (Special Powers) Act (AFSPA) in Kashmir “due to the prevailing situation” and asserted that the Indian Army is the “most disciplined” force in the world.

Mehbooba said the Army’s footprint in the Valley had increased due to the deteriorating security situation.

“If the situation deteriorates, the footprint of security forces will increase. If militancy or stone pelting increases, you will see more footprint of police. We don’t want that to happen,” she said yesterday while replying to a discussion on demand of grants for the departments under her charge.
