Govt forces resume search operation in northern Kashmir’s Kupwara

Srinagar: Government forces resumed search operation on Wednesday in the woods in the Keran sector of frontier district of Kupwara, where two infiltrators were killed immediately after they sneaked into this side, official sources said.

With the first light this morning, security forces resumed search operation in the dense woods near the Line of Control (LoC) in Keran sector despite hard weather conditions and difficult terrain.

They said troops guarding the LoC noticed a group of militants sneaking into this side from PoK in Keran sector in the frontier district of Kupwara in north Kashmir yesterday. However, when challenged and asked to surrender, the militants opened indiscriminate firing with automatic weapons, they said, adding that in the return, fire two militants, believed to be a foreigner, were killed. 

Additional security forces were rushed from nearby camp to conduct the searches in the woods. However, the operation was suspended last night due to darkness.

This morning, the operation was resumed, they said, adding that so far, no contact was established with the militants.
Over 200 militants are waiting across the LoC in launch pads to sneak into this side before the infiltration routes are closed due to heavy snowfall. However, there will be no lowering of guards during the winter, they said. Security forces have already intensified night patrolling on the LoC to foil any infiltration bids. (UNI)
