Authorities disallow Friday prayers at Jamia Masjid in Srinagar

Srinagar: Government on Friday disallowed congregationl Friday prayers at historic Jamia Masjid in Srinagar.

This was for the second consecutive Friday that congregational prayers were disallowed at the 16th century mosque.

Witnesses said that government forces had locked all the gates of the Jamia while all roads leading to it were blocked.

“Curfew-like restrictions were imposed in and around Jamia in Nowhatta area of the old town,” witnesses said.

Hurriyat Conference (M) chairman Mirwaiz Umar Farooq who lso delivers the Friday sermon at the mosque slammed the Jammu and Kashmir government for imposing curbs on Friday prayers at the historic Jamia Masjid.

“2nd consecutive Juma &15th of the year when Friday prayers barred at #JamaMasjid.Strict curfew imposed, people made hostages in their own homes in #ShahreKhas. No peaceful expression of protest against atrocities &injustices allowed,No law in the land except the law of #StateMight (SIC),” Mirwaiz tweeted.
