Srinagar: Intense clashes erupted in Soura locality of Kashmir’s capital city Srinagar Friday afternoon.

The clashes, witnesses said, erupted after hundreds of people participated in the funeral prayers in absentia of slain Hizb militants killed in a gunfight with government forces on Thursday in Kupwara district.

They said that hundreds of people assembled after offering congregational Friday prayers in Jinab sb Soura and other mosques and offered funeral prayers in absentia to the slain militants.

Immediately after the absentia prayers, they said, that youths pelted stones on government forces who used tear smoke shells to disperse them, triggering intense clashes.

The clashes in the area were going on when this report was being filed.
