New Delhi: Amid strong protest from opposition members in both the Houses of Parliament, Union Home Minister Rajnath Singh on Monday said the government has “no role” in the National Register of Citizens (NRC) related works in Assam as everything happening there was strictly on the supervision of Supreme Court.
The opposition members from Congress, Trinamool Congress, CPI-M, RJD, NCP and Samajwadi Party staged walkout in the Lower House.
Making a brief intervention in the Lok Sabha during Zero Hour, Mr Singh urged members “not to create panic” on the ‘sensitive issue’ in the northeastern state.
“This is a very sensitive issue and I will urge members not to create a panic situation on the issue,” Mr Singh said.
“I want to clarify whatever is happening is not our doing….whatever is happening is under the supervision of the Supreme Court,” the Home Minister. Moreover, he pointed out this is “not final NRC” and any person with grievances can go to the senior officials for redress.
There will be also a mechanism to approach tribunals on the issue, he said.
The issue was raised by Sudip Bandyopadhyay of Trinamool Congress – who claimed over 40,07,000 names have been deleted from the second list on NRC as released in Assam on Monday morning.
“Where will these people go,” he asked. Congress floor leader Mallikarjun Kharge supported the contention of Trinamool member and alleged perhaps there was an element of ‘deliberate action’ in deleting the names.
Mohammad Salim and J P Yadav of RJD also spoke on the issue saying the matter was ‘serious’.
The Rajya Sabha could not transact any business on the issue on Monday.
