An Army soldier shot himself dead with his service rifle while he was on duty in Surfraw area of Kangan in central Kashmir’s Ganderbal district on Saturday morning.

Sources identified the soldier as Havaldar Rajpal Singh (No:15467450 K unit 3 cavalry)  son of Rouf Singh resident of Kanpur Bihar and was posted at 24 Rashtriya Rifles.

The soldier’s colleagues rushed him to hospital after they heard the gunshot and found him lying in a pool of blood.

However he succumbed to his injuries later, police said.
