Anjuman Auqaf reiterates call to release Mirwaiz Umar Farooq

Srinagar, March 31: Anjuman Auqaf Jama Masjid Srinagar on Friday reiterated its call and urged authorities to release Mirwaiz Umar Farooq from house detention.

In a statement, the Anjuman Auqaf termed the act as highly regrettable and stated that it is 188th Friday since Mirwaiz has been under house arrest.

It emphasized that Mirwaiz’s unjustified detention is continuing unabated and authorities do not pay any heed to the demand for his immediate and unconditional release.

The statement urged the authorities to release Mirwaiz and allow him to fulfill his peaceful duties so that the people can benefit from his sermons from the pulpit of the Jama Masjid in the month of Ramadan.

The Anjuman also said that many worshipers who came to offer Friday prayer in the Jama Masjid again complained that the policemen took their mobile phones and ID cards and then allowed them to enter the grand mosque and asked them to collect it after prayers.

It condemned this behaviour and said that it looks like the authorities don’t want large congregations at the mosque and it urged the police officials not to harass the worshipers.
