Cop killed, daughter injured in militant attack in Soura Srinagar

Srinagar, May 24: A policeman was killed while his 9-year-old daughter was injured after militants fired at them outside their residence in Ganai Mohalla Anchar area of Soura here on Tuesday afternoon, police said.

“(Militants) fired indiscriminately upon one police personnel namely SgCt Saifullah Qadri son of Mohammad Syed Qadri of Ganai Mohalla Anchar outside his house (at around 1700 hours). In this incident, he and his 09 years old daughter received critical gunshot injuries and were immediately evacuated to nearby hospital for the treatment of their injuries,” a police spokesman.

However, Saifullah Qadri succumbed to his injuries at SKIMS Soura. “The condition of the other injured (Qadri’s daughter) is stated to be stable.”

He said police has registered a case under relevant sections of law and initiated investigation. He said officers continue to work to establish the full circumstances of the case while the whole area was cordoned off. However when this repot was filed, no arrest culminated.

Meanwhile a wreath laying ceremony was held at District Police Lines, Srinagar. Civil, CAPFs and Police officers led by IGP Kashmir Vijay Kumar laid floral wreaths on the mortal remains and paid rich tributes to Qadri.

While speaking to media persons on the sidelines of the ceremony, IGP Kashmir said that perpetrators of this act will be brought to justice very soon. He also said that entire society including families of the militants should condemn the attacks on unarmed policeman and her 9-year-old years daughter.

“We pay our rich tributes to the martyr for his supreme sacrifice made in the line of duty and stand by his family at this crucial juncture,” he said.

On the occasion, DIG CKR Srinagar Sujit Kumar, DIG CRPF Mathew A John, DC Srinagar Mohammad Aijaz Asad, SSP Srinagar Rakesh Balwal, SP PC Srinagar, all Zonal SsP and other officers and officials of Police and Security forces also paid floral tributes to Qadri.

Lieutenant Governor Manoj Sinha condemned the attack and said that those behind it will not go unpunished.
“I strongly condemn the cowardly terror attack in Soura, Srinagar. I assure the people that those behind this despicable attack will not go unpunished. I salute the martyr Policeman SgCt Saifullah Qadri. His service to the nation and supreme sacrifice will always be remembered,” he said in a tweet.

He said his thoughts are with the bereaved family and prayed for the speedy recovery of cop’s daughter.

Meanwhile National Conference President Dr Farooq Abdullah and Vice President Omar Abdullah also condemned the killing of the policeman.

Farooq said, “I unequivocally condemn the dastardly killing. Yet another family will have to live with lifelong pain and agon. My heartfelt condolences and sympathies are with the bereaved family. I pray for the speedy recovery of the injured girl.”

In his condemnation message, Omar said ,”I unequivocally condemn this attack on Constable Saifullah Qadri of J&K police in which he lost his life. The cowardly attackers not only killed Constable Qadri also injured his daughter, who I understand is out of danger. I pray for her speedy recovery,” he said.
