High-security prison to come up in J&K; Revenue dept transfers 204 kanals to Prisons dept

Srinagar, Aug 12: The administration of Jammu & Kashmir Union Territory is planning to construct a high-security prison which will be equipped with modern gadgets for security and surveillance.

To begin with, the Department of Revenue has transferred 204 Kanals of state land to the Prison department for establishment of J&K’s first-ever high security prison.

“Sanction is hereby accorded to the transfer of state land measuring 204 Kanal 16 Marla bearing Khasra numbers 917/896(43 Kanal 7 Marla), 596/2(13 Kanal 1 Marla), 600(93 Kanal 12 Marla), 601(06 kanal 18 Marla), 607(09 Kanal 12 Marla), 606(8 Kanal 1 Marla), 608 (25 kanal, 01 Marla and 597( 05 kanal, 4 Marla), situated at village Dhar Dharochan, Tehsil Bhalwal, district Jammu in favour of the Prison department for establishment of a high-security prison,” reads an order issued by the Revenue department.

According to the order, the land shall be used only for the purpose for which the sanction of transfer has been accorded after obtaining all other permissions as may be required for its establishment from the competent authority.

At present there are 13 functional prisons which include two central jails, nine district jails, one special jail & one sub-jail.

In March this year, Hira Nagar sub-jail in Kathua district was declared as a holding centre for lodging Rohingya refugees. kno
