Islamic Studies Dept KU Organizes ‘Prof. Mushir-ul-Haq Memorial Lecture’

Srinagar, Jun 13: In remembrance of former Vice-Chancellor Prof. Mushir-ul-Haq, Shah-i-Hamadan Institute of Islamic Studies (SHIIS), University of Kashmir organized an online event titled ‘Prof. Mushir-ul-Haq Memorial Lecture’ here on Sunday. Haq served the varsity as Vice Chancellor from 1987 to 1990. 

A statement reads that the program started with the recitation of the Holy Qur’an by Dr. Hafiz Shahnawaz Ahmad Shah, Assistant Professor Department of Persian, University of Kashmir, following which Prof. Manzoor Ahmad Bhat, Head of the Department formally welcomed all the dignitaries and introduced the theme of the special lecture before the august gathering.

While paying rich tributes to Late Prof. Mushir ul Haq and referring to his contribution in the horizontal as well as vertical growth and development of the University, Prof Bhat made special reference to the noble endeavor of Prof. Mushirul Haq in the establishment of Shah-i-Hamadan Institute of Islamic Studies way back in 1988.

Prof. Bhat also provided a sketch of the achievements of the Department over the last three decades in terms of teaching, research and academic activities, equally mentioning the contributions of the former Heads of the Department.

The resource person-cum-Key note speaker, Padma Shri Emeritus Prof. Akhtar ul Wasey, Hon’ble President Maulana Azad University Jodhpur Rajasthan, in his key note address recalled his early association with late Prof. Mushir ul Haq and illuminated the audience with his first hand information.

The learned resource person specifically focused on Late Mushirul Haq’s conviction and concern on the education of Indian Muslims and his endeavors in this direction.

Prof. Wasey praised the efforts of the organizers in remembering the founder of the Department by conducting such memorial lecture to throw light on the life and contribution of Late. Mushir ul Haq.

This was followed by the remarks of Guest of Honor, the worthy Dean Academic Affairs of the University of Kashmir, Prof Shabir Ahmad Bhat. Prof. Shabir in his speech made mention of Late. Mushir ul Haq as an outstanding social scientist and equally an administrator par excellence, in the capacity of being the former Vice Chancellor of the University of Kashmir.

Prof. Bhat produced some recordings of Late. Mushir ul Haq where the former HVC was so much enthusiastic and a person of vision and mission in promoting the overall academics of Kashmiri society in general and Kashmir University in particular.

The presidential address was delivered by the Hon’ble Vice Chancellor of the University of Kashmir, Prof. Talat Ahmad. Prof. Talat at the very outset congratulated Shah-i-Hamadan Institute of Islamic Studies for organizing such an important lecture on the contribution of Late. Prof. Mushril Haq.

Prof. Talat specifically elaborated on the qualities of his predecessor and threw light on the relevance and significance of such events and insisted that research on such personalities, who have given their lives for the upliftment of the education sector, is the need of the hour.

The Hon’ble Vice Chancellor encouraged the Department for organizing more lectures of this nature while assuring full support from his good office and also exploring the possibility of establishing Late Mushir ul Haq Chair for inter faith Understanding, that was earlier approved by the University Council , the Apex body of the University.

The lecture was attended by the galaxy of scholars from different educational institutions of the country, union territory of Jammu and Kashmir, United Kingdom, Malaysia and Turkey.

The vote of thanks was presented by Dr. Nasir Nabi, Assistant Professor, SHIIS while as Dr. Burhan Rashid, member of teaching faculty SHIIS moderated the technical sessions of the whole lecture. The extension lecture was held on the virtual mode keeping in view the current pandemic situation. gns
