Snowfall aftermath: Kashmir cut-off as vehicular, air traffic remain suspended

Srinagar, Jan 04: Kashmir Valley remained cut-off from the rest of the States as the only road—Srinagar-Jammu highway as well as the air traffic remained suspended following the fresh snowfall in the Valley.

Officials said that the highway following the slippery conditions of the road remained closed for vehicular movement today as a precautionary measure.

Officials said that around 4000 vehicles are stranded along the Srinagar-Jammu highway today as the road was thrown closed for the traffic to prevent any untoward incident following the slippery condition triggered by the fresh snowfall.

The commuters had to face hardships along the road after the authorities suspended the vehicular movement.

Moreover, the air traffic to and from Srinagar International Airport was also suspended for the second consecutive day today due to less visibility.

Santosh Dhoke, Airport Director Airports Authority of India (AAI), Srinagar International Airport said all the 28 flights scheduled to and from Srinagar were cancelled today due to less visibility.

Airline officials meanwhile said that the decision regarding resumption of air traffic will be taken accordingly tomorrow.

Officials in the traffic department however stated that the Srinagar-Jammu highway would continue to remain closed for the vehicular movement tomorrow. “No vehicular movement shall be allowed on Jammu-Srinagar NHW from Jammu towards Srinagar and vice-versa in view of snow accumulation around the Jawahar Tunnel and inclement weather prediction issued by MeT department in J&K for next few days,” Traffic department said in a statement issued here.

Meanwhile, spokesman said that Mughal road was also blocked due to snow accumulation, thus the traffic was simultaneously suspended along the road.

Nonetheless, the Srinagar-Leh highway is already thrown closed by the divisional administration Kashmir from January 01 till further orders—(KNO)
