Sopore killing: Police version ‘concocted story’, says CPI(M)

Srinagar, Sept 17: The death of a 23-year old youth a day after his arrest by police in Sopore area of Baramulla district is another glaring example of how the rule of law is being violated with impunity in Kashmir, CPI (M) said in a statement issued here.

“The police version about the killing of the youth is a concocted story which nobody trusts in Kashmir. The situation in Kashmir has reached a stage where even demanding a probe into such incidents looks like a joke as in the past such incidents the probes yielded no results. None of the so-called investigations so-far has ever brought the culprits to book,” the party said in a statement, adding, “A probe was ordered into the killing of three labourers from Rajouri in Shopian on July 17, who were later passed on as militants. However, till date the families of the slain youth have not even been able to obtain the results of DNA tests.”

The party said rule of law is one of the biggest deterrents to prevent violence. “But if the rule of law is violated it promotes more violence. Unfortunately in Kashmir the rule of law is being violated with impunity.”

The killing of a woman in Batamaloo area of Srinagar during an encounter between the militants and security forces is another unfortunate incident, the party said. “Violence and killings can never be a solution to any problem. Civilians getting killed is extremely unfortunate and condemnable and must be stopped.”\
