Weather Department Predicts Heavy Rains, Thunderstorms in J&K till May 31, Farmers Worried

Srinagar, May 27: Weatherman on Wednesday predicted rains in Jammu and Kashmir, peaking on last two days of this month. It also issued a “yellow warning” for isolated thunder squalls with lightning and gusty winds (30-40 Kmph) in both Jammu and Kashmir regions till May 31.

A meteorological department official said there would be an increase in the precipitation in the next few days, forecasting ‘fairly widespread’ rains on Friday and ‘widespread’ on May 30 and 31. Regarding next 24-hour, the weatherman has predicted scattered rainfall in Kashmir and isolated showers in the Jammu division.

At the beginning of the next month, the weatherman said there would be a progressive decrease in the intensity of the rains which chances of scattered rainfall on June 1 and isolated showers across Jammu and Kashmir the next day.

The rain forecast comes a relief to people in Jammu given the sweltering heat wave conditions from last few days. At 42.6 degrees Celsius, the maximum temperature in Jammu was 3.5 notches above season’s average, making it the hottest recorded place in the J&K on Wednesday. Srigar recorded maximum of 30.3 degrees Celsius, highest in any other place in the Valley.

The weatherman has also issued a yellow warning for isolated thunder squalls with lightning and gusty winds (30-40 Kmph) in both Jammu and Kashmir regions till the end of this month.

There are four types colour codes signifying the level of caution: green (which means no action), yellow (situation to be watched), amber (government agencies need to be prepared for severe weather), and red (action needed by the agencies). (GNS)
