Governor Malik holds a constitutional position; his statements carry implications: Soz

Srinagar: Reacting to Jammu and Kashmir Governor Satya Pal Malik’s comment, asking militants to kill corrupt people who have looted Kashmir instead of the innocent ones, senior Congress leader Saifuddin Soz said the Governor occasionally forgets that the implications of his statements can create difficulty in the system of his governance.

‘In his occasional naiveté, the Governor occasionally forgets that the implications of his statements can create difficulty in the system of his governance. He sometimes wants to talk on issues, transparently, but, that can lead to friction in the system,’ Mr Soz said in a statement issued here on Tuesday.

Soz alleged that while he talks against corruption and corrupt persons, his remarks are many times on the correct line but, then, his remarks carry the implications which can create misunderstanding with many political activists in the J&K State. ‘Firstly, it is absolutely wrong for him to consider all J&K politicians to be corrupt,’ he said.

He said the correct course for the Governor would be to name such politicians who seem to him to be corrupt.

‘It would then be the responsibility of the named characters to get their names cleared from the concerned institution or pocket the insult. If he does not do that, then the one-sided narrative will render him ineffective as the constitutional head of the State. Frankly speaking, it does not behove him, as the Constitutional Head of J&K State, to pass sweeping remarks against the general run of politicians in the state,” he added.

However, expressing regret over his comment, Malik on Monday said he made the remarks in a fit of rage and frustration due to rampant corruption in the state.

The Governor said he should not have made such a comment because he is the Governor of the state.

Malik, however, said his personal feeling is the same as he said on Sunday. He further stressed that several political leaders and big bureaucrats in Jammu and Kashmir are corrupt. ‘I’m the Governor of J&K only because of my reputation in Delhi. I don’t come from the family of politicians,’ he added.
