DC Srinagar urges Imams to speak in mosques against rising drug addiction in Kashmir

Srinagar: Asserting that de-addiction and awareness will not be of much help if society and families do not stand up to this menace, Deputy Commissioner (DC) Srinagar Shahid Iqbal Choudhary on Friday said let every mosque speak loudly against rising drug-addition in Kashmir.

”On Friday, let every mosque in #Kashmir speak loudly against rising drug-addiction menace. Society & families need to stand up. Laws, De-addiction n Awareness won’t be of much help otherwise,” Dr Choudhary wrote on micro-blogging site twitter.

To this, a religious preacher said that he will deliver sermon (on Friday) against drugs in light of Quran and Sunnah.

The comment by the DC Srinagar comes in the wake of death of a youth, allegedly due to drugs, at Khawaja Bazar area in downtown Srinagar on Tuesday.

Many NGOs have been raising awareness about ill effects of drug-addiction in the valley, including Jammu and Kashmir Academy of Unified Martial Arts (JKAUMA). The JKAUMA under its ‘Drugs out, Sports In’ initiative has been organising awareness programmes and seminars in schools and colleges, besides roadshows and rallies to raise awareness about ill effects of drugs and promote healthy living though martial arts.
