Sumbal rape: Police file chargesheet, accused booked under POCSO

Srinagar: Police on Saturday filed the charge sheet before a special court of principal district and sessions Bandipora in the alleged rape case of a minor in Sumbal.

Reports said that the police filed the charge sheet in a record time of 17 days from the commission of the alleged crime.

The accused has been booked under Protection of Children from Sexual Offences (POCSO) section 3 and 5 and 376 a, b and 342 RPC.

Last week, the police had said that the allegations of rape in the case have been proven and that a charge sheet will be filed soon.

Senior Superintendent of Police Bandipora, Rahul Malik said that the incident involving an assault on a 3-year-old child in Sumbal is very much true and based on facts and evidence. “We are going to file the charge sheet in court against the accused soon,” he said.

Widespread protests broke out across Kashmir following the alleged rape of the three-year-old earlier this month. The protesters clashed with the armed forces in which one youth was killed in Pattan area of north Kashmir.
