US, Russia better understand how to unlock Syria peace process after Sochi talks : Pompeo

Washington: The United States and Russia have a better understanding on areas of disagreement in the Syrian peace process that they may be able to unlock the stalemate, US Secretary of State Mike Pompeo told reporters after his meetings with Russian President Vladimir Putin and Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov in Sochi.

“So there’s the political process associated with UN Security Council Resolution 2254 that has been hung up, and I think we mutually now can begin to work together in a way to unlock that, to get that process to at least take the first step of forming that committee,” Pompeo said on Tuesday. “I think we now have a common understanding of the places we were hung up, which I think we can work our way through.”

Pompeo confirmed both sides made concrete steps on Syria, however, he could not share any details.
