Srinagar: Secretary, Srinagar Municipal Corporation (SMC), Hilal Dewani, who was attached by the government pending an inquiry, is freely operating from his office.

“He is working as usual,” sources told The Kashmir Press.

“Despite orders he has not been removed from his post. He continues to function from the office as secretary SMC”.

Sources said that he comes regularly to the office, signs documents and does other related official work.

“We have no idea as to why he operates despite attachment orders. But he does,” sources said.

Sources said that Dewani was working on several fronts inside the SMC.

“His job was actually related to the Council and the Mayor’s office. But he works in the administration, deals with transfers of employees and also works as Public Information Officer,” sources said.

In March, the government had attached secretary Dewani with housing board, Jammu and Kashmir, Srinagar.

The order duly signed by Principal Secretary housing and urban development department, Dheeraj Gupta, read that Dewani was was attached following his pending inquiry.

The order, however, did not spell out the reasons for the attachment.

Talking to The Kashmir Press, Gupta said that he was not in the office, adding, he would not be in position to comment.

Later, when again contacted, his office said he was not present the office.

The SMC commissioner Tariq Ali could not be contacted for the comment.
