Protest march held in Downtown Srinagar against NIA summon to Mirwaiz

Srinagar: Scores of people including men, women and children after the congregational Friday prayers in Jamia Masjid Srinagar marched from the historic masjid to Mirwaiz Manzil at Rajouri Kadal denouncing the alleged harassment of Kashmir’s chief cleric Mirwaiz Umar Farooq by the National Investigation Agency.

Chanting slogans in favour of Mirwaiz, the protesters condemned the NIA summon to Mirwaiz and denounced the ban on Jama’at-e-Islami.

Authorities on Friday allowed the congregational Friday prayers at jamia Masjid after two weeks.

Meanwhile Hurriyat Conference (M) chairman and chief cleric Mirwaiz Umar Farooq addressing the faithful during his Friday sermon said that the people of Kashmir will continue to seek peaceful resolution of the internationally recognised dispute. “We shall not be intimidated by New Delhi.”

Mirwaiz said that seeking a peaceful resolution of Kashmir is not terrorism. “For last more than 70 years conspiracies were hatched against Kashmiris, leadership and the pulpit of Jamia Masjid and the struggle for self-determination continued despite these assaults.”

He said that the people of Kashmir will not bow down and Delhi can’t “force us into submission by intimidating us”.
