Two militants killed in Sopore encounter: Police

Srinagar: At least militants were killed in an encounter between Army, Police and the militants in Warpora area of north Kashmir’s Sopore, Police officials said.

Officials said that the identification of slain militants was being ascertained.

A cordon and search operation was launched jointly by Police and Army in Warpora following the credible inputs about the presence of militants there, police said

As the searches were going on, the search party was fired upon by the militants, they said, adding that the fire was retaliated leading to a gunfight.

In the ensuing encounter, two militants were killed and the bodies were retrieved from the site of encounter, adding that their identities and affiliations are being ascertained.

Incriminating material including arms and ammunition was recovered from the site of encounter. Police has registered a case and initiated investigation in the matter, police said.

Meanwhile, police urged locals not to venture inside encounter zone since such an area can prove dangerous due to stray explosive materials. “People are requested to cooperate with police till the area is completely sanitized and cleared of all the explosive materials if any,” police said.

Authorities had also snapped mobile internet services in Sopore since Thursday evening.

Meanwhile, clashes also broke out between youth and forces near encounter site during which forces used tear gas canisters to disperse the agitating youth. (KNS)
