Blast kills 10 civilians in Afghanistan

Kabul: At least 10 civilians including two children were killed and 13 others wounded when an unexploded ordnance detonated among a crowd of civilians at a local market in eastern Afghan province of Paktika on Monday, a local official said.

Local media while quoting a Paktika police spokesman Shah Mahmood Aryan, said the incident took place when a resident found an unexploded ordnance at a local market in Janikhel district and tried to defuse it but he was not succeeded and the device detonated while many people had gathered in the area.

“Ten martyred and 13 wounded civilians were admitted to a main hospital in the provincial capital Sharan city Monday morning following a bomb attack in Jani Khil district,”Chinese news agency Xinhua quoted Dr. Mohammad Raffah, a provincial health official, as saying.

Three among the wounded received life-threatening injuries and were subsequently shifted to Afghan capital of Kabul for treatment, he said.

The blast occurred after an improvised explosive device (IED) was detonated at a bazaar in Jani Khil district on Monday morning, according to a local police source.

No group has claimed responsibility for the attack so far.
