Uncertainty looms large over US-Mexico border wall row, shutdown likely to continue into new year

Washington: US government partial shutdown is likely to stretch towards the new year, after legislators failed to make a breakthrough in the row over President Donald Trump’s demand for a US-Mexico border wall on Thursday.

After convening for just a few minutes following the official Christmas break, a still nearly empty Senate adjourned, deciding to renew budget deliberations only next Wednesday, the last day of the current Republican-controlled Congress.

The situation has added to concerns over the outlook for the US economy in 2019, leading the stock market on a rollercoaster ride in recent days, according to BBC.

Taking to Tweet, President Trump said, “Have the Democrats finally realized that we desperately need Border Security and a Wall on the Southern Border. Need to stop Drugs, Human Trafficking,Gang Members & Criminals from coming into our Country. Do the Dems realize that most of the people not getting paid are Democrats?”

In reply to that, Senator Dick Durbin retweeted, “No end in sight to the President’s government shutdown. He’s taken our government hostage over his outrageous demand for a $5 billion border wall that would be both wasteful and ineffective.”

The president’s opponents accuse him of exaggerating the issue of immigration for political gain, and argue that there are better forms of border security than a wall, BBC said on its website.

The wall funding heavily costs an amount of 5 billion dollar, which is a very large amount.
