SC should analyse legality of Centre’s ‘snooping powers order’: Omar

Srinagar: With the Centre reportedly allowing government agencies to intercept, monitor, and decrypt ‘any information generated, transmitted, received or stored in any computer’, National Conference (NC) vice-president Omar Abdullah on Friday said that the Supreme Court should take a long hard look at the legality of the order.

“Given that the government has now authorised multiple agencies to snoop on the personal & official computers of the Hon’ble judges of the Supreme Court I hope the SC takes a long hard look at the legality of the order,” Mr Abdullah, who is the former chief minister of J&K, wrote on micro-blogging site twitter.

He was responding to reports that the Ministry of Home Affairs on Thursday issued an order authorising ten Central agencies to intercept, monitor, and decrypt ‘any information generated, transmitted, received or stored in any computer’.

“The subscriber or service provider or any person in charge of the computer resource will be bound to extend all facilities and technical assistance to the agencies and failing to do will invite seven-year imprisonment and fine,” the order reportedly said.
