Kashmir highway through, historic Mughal road remains closed

Srinagar: The historic 86-km-long Mughal road remained closed for the 6th day on Tuesday due to accumulation of snow and slippery conditions while the Srinagar-Jammu highway was through with some restrictions.

Traffic could not be allowed on the Mughal road, linking Shopian in south Kashmir with Rajouri and Poonch in Jammu region as snow clearance operation could not be completed so far, a traffic police official said.

He said snow clearance operation has already been started from both sides. However, due to below freezing temperature particularly during the night, snow had frozen due to which the road has become slippery particularly at Pir-ki-Gali.

The district administration of Rajouri and Poonch and Shopian are working to put through the road which remained closed during winter months due to heavy snowfall.

The 300-km-long Srinagar-Jammu national highway was through for traffic with some restrictions, he said.

Only Heavy Motor Vehicle(HMV) traffic , including trucks loaded with essentials, will operate from Jammu to Srinagar only Tuesday he said adding no HMV will be allowed from opposite direction.

However, Light Motor Vehicle (LMV) traffic will be allowed from Srinagar to Jammu, he said.
