Army shoots dead ‘mentally challenged’ person in southern Kashmir’s Shopian

Srinagar: Army shot dead a mentally-challenged man on Saturday allegedly after he tried to cross the fence of their camp in southern Kashmir’s Shopian district.

Reports said that at around 3:00 am, the army personnel observed the movement of a suspicious person near their camp at Puhnoo village of the district. The soldiers, a police spokesperson said challenged the person who had come closer to the wall of the camp.

“The sentry fired warning shots in a bid to stop the unknown man. However, he continued moving further. Later, sentry opened fire upon him,” he added.

The slain man has been identified as Rayees Ahmad, son of Abdul Hameed Wani of Begam Kulgam. He is said to be mentally challenged.

Meanwhile, the body of the man has been kept at the police station Shopian for legal formalities.

The family of the slain man were at the police station when this report was filed.
