Sailed abroad: 2,937 Pakistan nationals imprisoned in Saudi, says report

Islamabad: The Interior ministry of Pakistan on Friday revealed that out of 11,802 Pakistan nationals jailed abroad, 2,937 are in Saudi Arabia alone, followed by 1,842 in Greece.

The report was sought by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, on the directions of Supreme Court of Pakistan.
Pakistan Minister of Human Rights Shireen Mazari said in a statement here that continuous efforts were being made for the repatriation of jailed Pakistani nationals languishing in foreign jails.

Transfer of offender’s agreement has also been initiated by the Pakistan Interior ministry with 20 countries, including Turkey, China and Russia.

Total 582 Pakistan nationals are languishing in Indian jails.

Earlier in a goodwill gesture at the time of Indian Independence Day, India had released 21 Pakistani prisoners, including seven Pakistani civilians and 14 fishermen. Pakistan also responded by repatriating 30 Indian prisoners, including 27 fishermen and three civilians.

The fishermen community is the major victim of violation of international norms as they ‘inadvertently’ trespass international waters.
