Former UN Sec General Kofi Annan dies at 80

Former UN secretary-genera Kofi Annan has died at the age of 80 on Saturday. He was awarded the Nobel Peace Prize for humanitarian work.

According to BBC, the foundation named after him, The Kofi Annan Foundation said in a statement that Annan “passed away peacefully on Saturday after a short illness.”

Annan was the first black African to take up the role of the world’s top diplomat, serving from 1997 to 2006.

Annan’s tenure as UN secretary-general coincided with the Iraq War and the HIV/Aids pandemic
