Amarnath: Yatra suspended from Pahalgam, progressing on Baltal track despite rain

Srinagar: Yatra to the holy cave shrine in south Kashmir Himalayas was suspended from traditional Pahalgam track on Monday due to slippery conditions following rain, while it was progressing on shortest Baltal route despite rain, official sources said.

They said for the safety of the pilgrims, the yatra on traditional Pahalgam track was suspended this morning as the track had become slippery due to overnight rain. It will be resumed once the weather improves and track become safe for undertaking the foot journey, the sources said.

However, 125 pilgrims left Baltal base camp for the holy cave early this morning when there was light rain. Reports have been received about shooting stone at some places.

‘We are keeping a close watch on the situation. The pilgrims who had left base camp this morning are on way to the cave shrine. They are likely to reach the cave this afternoon after covering th 14-km-long hilly track on foot,’ the sources said.

Meanwhile, on the 46th day of the 60-day-long annual pilgrimage which commenced from June 28, as many as 806 pilgrims had paid obeisance at the cave shrine. With this a total of 2,78.878 yatris from different parts of the country have paid obeisance this year. Pilgrims, who had night halt at nearby camps are also reaching the cave shrine to pay obeisance since early this morning.
