Paddy blast in Budgam: Agricultural deptt issues advisory to be vigilant

Budgam: Department of Agriculture has issued an advisory to farmers through public notices in 21 agricultural zones of district Budgam  to remain vigilant that there crops may be hit with paddy blast due to sudden weather changes.

The notice advised for immediate contact with concerned agriculture officers in case symptoms arise.

Chief Agriculture Officer Budgam, Shabir Ahmad, said that the directions to all the officers of 21 zones of the district have been issued to go far public notices and ‘mass awareness’.

“The symptoms of disease were found in the Khansahibs, Arizal area, and our team after visiting the area have suggested farmers to go for sprays,” Ahmad said.

The disease is such deadly, Ahmad said, that it can destroy the whole crop within 48 hours.

“Paddy blast is an epidemic,” he said.

Farmers have been asked to remain in touch with concerned agriculture officers in case they find symptoms in their fields.

Iqbal Andrabi, AEO, Khanda said that the sudden weather change may cause the ‘Paddy Blast’ disease.

“The department is ready to deal with any of the situation that may arise, but farmers need to remain vigilant,” Andrabi said.

Andrabi, however, added that there is no need to panic but farmers be vigilant.
