Militant killed in encounter with security forces in Handwara

Srinagar: A militant was killed in an encounter with government forces at Handwara in the frontier Kashmir district of Kupwara on Thursday.

With this incident, three militants and a soldier have been killed in Kupwara district during the past three weeks in separate encounters.

Official sources said following specific information about presence of militants, a joint Cordon and Search Operation (CASO) was launched by the Special Operations Group (SOG) of state police, Army and CRPF in village Sudal in Handwara.

However, when security forces were moving towards a particular area, militants hiding there, fired at them with automatic weapons.

Government forces also retaliated, ensuing in an encounter, they said, adding the operation was still going on when the reports last came in.

Additional security forces have been rushed and the area has been cordoned to foil any attempts by militants to escape.

Meanwhile, a brief encounter took place between militants and security forces near the Line of Control (LoC) in Keran sector on Wednesday.

A brief exchange of fire also took place between security forces and militants, hiding in the woods at Balthedyan near LoC in Tangdhar in Kupwara on Saturday.
