Historic Jamia Masjid remains closed for 2nd day on Saturday

Srinagar: The historic Jamia Masjid in the downtown Srinagar, remained closed for the second day on Saturday as a precautionary measure to prevent any protests.

Earlier it was closed on Friday by the authorities.

Today in wake of when strike call given by Joint Resistance Leadership comprising of Syed Ali Geelani, Mirwaiz Umar Farooq and Mohammad Yasin Malik against shifting of Dukhtaran-e-Milat (DeM) chief Asiya Andrabi and her two associates to New Delhi by National Investigation Agency (NIA) in connection with alleged anti national activities the mosque remained closed. 

No Friday prayers could be offered in the Masjid, stronghold of moderate Hurriyat Conference (HC) chairman Mirwaiz Moulvi Omar Farooq, who has been put under house arrest since early Friday morning to prevent him from addressing congregation there.

All gates of the historic worship place remained closed and large number of security forces and state police personnel remained deployed in the main Jamia market and adjoining areas to prevent people from entering there.

No prayers could be offered in the masjid since yesterday due to restrictions, the locals alleged.

All roads leading to Jamia Masjid, including at Rajouri Kadal, Rangar Stop and Gojwara have been closed with barbed wire.

However, vehicles, carrying patients and medical staff were being allowed towards S K Institute of Medical Sciences (SKIMS) after checking their documents. (UNI)
