New Delhi:  The four opposition Chief Ministers, including N Chandrababu Naidu and Mamata Banerjee on Sunday, met Prime Minister Narendra Modi at Rashtrapati Bhawan .

According to sources, the meeting at the venue of the fourth meeting of the Governing Council of NITI Aayog is said to be merely courteous.

Mr Naidu along with West Bengal Chief Minister Banerjee and their counterparts from Kerala and Karnataka

Pinarayi Vijayan and H D Kumaraswamy on Saturday evening met separately and planned a joint strategy to take on the Centre on greater autonomy for the states.

All four opposition Chief Ministers and Prime Minister Modi were seen exchanging pleasantries.

Meanwhile, at the Governing Council meet, sources said, Bihar Chief Minister Nitish Kumar backed Mr Naidu’s demand for Special Category status for Andhra Pradesh.

For her part, Ms Banerjee agreed with her Andhra Pradesh counterpart’s stance that performing states should berewarded adequately by the Finance Commission.

In his remarks at the meet, Mr Naidu raised the issue of Special Category status for the state and matters concerning revenue deficit for his government.

Sources further said among others, Chief Ministers of UP Yogi Adityanath, Assam Sarbanand Sonowal also spoke.

The annual Governing Council meeting of the NITI AAYOG is being held In the backdrop of standoff between  Chief Ministers of opposition ruled states and the Centre over the issue of full statehood to Delhi and the sit-in stir by Delhi Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal . (UNI)
