Srinagar, July 21 (KNS): Anjuman Auqaf Jama Masjid Srinagar criticised the government over four years of detention of its president Mirwaiz Dr Moulvi Muhammad Umar Farooq who was barred from offering 204th consecutive Friday prayers today.

The Anjuman in a statement said that due to his detention, he is prevented from delivering Friday sermons and offer prayers in the Jama Masjid, which is a direct interference with religious rights of the Muslims of the Valley.

The statement reads that his continuous detention is a serious concern for Anjuman Auqaf as well as the people. “Anxiety against his detention is increasing with each passing day. Severe disappointment is seen among the worshipers at the historic Jama Masjid Srinagar who come from cities and towns to benefit from the wise sermons.”

The Anjuman urged the authorities to ensure his unconditional release on the occasion of holy month of Muharram so that he can fulfill his religious obligations.
