SRINAGAR: Amid the controversy surrounding the imposition of property tax in Jammu & Kashmir, the administration of the Union Territory has decided to extend the deadline for filing property tax returns.

The Housing & Urban Development Department (H&UDD) has made amendments to the rules governing the imposition of property tax in Jammu & Kashmir after the original deadline for submitting property tax returns had passed.

The amended rules state that the particulars of the property and the corresponding tax for the financial year 2023-24 must now be furnished by July 31, 2023.

“Provided that the particulars of the property and the tax due thereon for the financial year 2023-24 shall be furnished in Form-1 by July 31, 2023,” reads the proviso added to Rule 5 of “The Jammu and Kashmir Property Tax (Municipal Corporations) Rules 2023” and “The Jammu & Kashmir Property Tax (Other Municipalities) Rules, 2023.”

This proviso was added as the original deadline for filing property tax returns is May 30 of the relevant financial year.

“It was necessary from a legal standpoint to add the proviso since the deadline for submitting the particulars of the property and the tax due for the ongoing financial year had passed on May 30,” explained an official.

The imposition of property tax has faced criticism from mainstream political parties. However, the J&K administration has maintained that Jammu and Kashmir is the last region in the country to come under the purview of property tax. kno
