Srinagar: Hurriyat leader Syed Ali Shah Geelani passed away  in summer capital  Srinagar.

According to family sources, 92 year old Geelani has developed complications in the chest and breathed his last late evening.

Family sources of the senior Hurriyat leader confirmed that he passed away at his residence at around 10 pm.

Syed Ali Shah Geelani was bonr on 29 September 1929. He was previously a member of Jamaat-e-Islami Kashmir but later on founded Tehreek-e-Hurriyat.

He was born in a village in north Kashmir’s Bandipora district and educated at Sopore.

He has served as the chairman of All Parties Hurriyat Conference, a conglomerate of pro-freedom parties in Jammu and Kashmir.

He was an MLA from the Sopore constituency in 1972, 1977 and in 1987. In June 2020, Geelani quit the Hurriyat.
