Kulgam gunfight: 3 militants killed, firing resumes; train service, internet suspended

Srinagar: Firing resumed between militants and government forces at the encounter site in southern Kashmir’s Chowgam village of Kulgam district on Saturday morning.

Local sources said that the government forces came under intense fire after they tried to the enter the house that was razed to ground using IED’s earlier today.

Police sources confirmed that three militants have been killed so far in the gunfight. They said more militants are supposed to be trapped.

The official twitter handle of Jammu and Kashmir police also confirmed the killing of three militants.  “3 reported to have been neutralised. Train services between Baramulla -Qazigund suspended. Police and Security Forces on job,” police said on Twitter.

Earlier, reports said a joint team of the army and SOG launched a cordon-and-search operation at Chowgam following specific inputs about the presence of some militants.

While the CASO was going on, the forces fired warning shots towards the suspected spot, which was retaliated by the hiding militants triggering a gunfight.

Meanwhile, authorities have suspended train services across Kashmir in view of the gunfight.
Officials said that the service between Baramulla and Banihal will remain suspended today “in view of apprehension of law and order problem in Kashmir valley, especially south Kashmir”.

The authorities have also snapped the mobile internet and broadband services in the district.
