Srinagar, July 27: Police, army and CRPF on Tuesday called off operation at Gurwattan Aharbal area of Kulgam in which one LeT militant was killed on Monday, officials said.
A police spokesman said that at about 1715 hours on July 26 a joint cordon and search operation was launched by Police and army’s 62RR based on specific input generated by Srinagar Police regarding presence of militants in forest area of Gurwattan Aharbal area of Kulgam.
During the search operation, the hiding militants fired on the joint search party, which was retaliated leading to an encounter, he said. Later on CRPF also joined the operation, he said. In the ensuing encounter, he said, one militant was killed.
“Due to darkness, the operation was suspended and the cordon remained intact throughout the night. In the wee hours, search of the area continued.”
Subsequently, he said, body of the killed militant identified as Amir Yousuf Mir lias Haider son of Mohammad Yousuf Mir of Chek-e-Cholin, Shopian linked with LeT was recovered.
As per police records, he said Amir Yousuf was A+ categorized militant and was active since 2017.
“He was involved in several cases including attacks on security forces and civilian atrocities,” the spokesman said.
The spokesman said that Amir had a long history of cases which included firing upon the motorcade of SP Shopian at Landoora Hermain Crossing in which the vehicle of SP Shopian got damaged, kidnapping of three Police personnel from their homes at Batagund Kapran area on 21 September 2018 and subsequently killing them. “Besides, he was also involved in a series of attacks on Police/Security establishments. He was also part of a group involved in firing upon the Army Camp at Mantribugh Shopian and Police Station Shopian, besides threatening local Panchs.”
