Crackdown against sand mafia; 7 persons arrested in Shopian

Srinagar, May 03: Police on Wednesday seized seven vehicles and arrested at least seven persons who were engaged in extracting river bed material from Rembiara near Doomwani village. A police statement issued here said.

In statement police said that “On receiving an information about the illegal extraction of River Bed Matarial from Rambiara Nallah, Police team headed by Wajahat Hussain DY Sp Hq Shopian, SHO Shopian Javid Ahmad and DO Keegam conducted a raid and seized 04 tippers, 01 JCB and 02 tractors from Rambiara Nallah Near Doomwani Village and arrested 7 persons who were engaged in extracting River Bed Matarial from the Nallah,” the statement said.

“In this connection case FIR No 126/2020 under section 379, 431,188 IPC and 3 PPDP Act stands registered at Police Station Shopian and Investigations taken up,” statement said.

“General public has appreciated the police action to save the natural resources from being eroded and protect the natural ecology,” the statement added (GNS).
