Srinagar, April 16: The cyber wing of Jammu and Kashmir police said on Thursday that six people have been arrested for “misusing social media” and posting “fakes videos and pictures to instigate people”.
Kashmir Cyber police station Srinagar said that there have been a lot of reports of misusing of social media sites particularly Facebook, Twitter and Instagram by the miscreants using fake and anonymous names.
Pointing out cases of social media misuse, the statement said that on April 14, a fake new was uploaded on Facebook wherein a morphed picture of Lal Chowk Ganta Ghar Srinagar has been shown with a flag of Pakistan administered Kashmir.
“Immediately the FIR was registered, accused were identified and arrested under the provisions of law,” the statement said.
On April 5, the statement said an old video was uploaded showing that 3 civilian were killed and 30 others injured, in order to create panic.
Days later, the statement said some miscreants uploaded fabricated document related to record of proceedings of Hon’ble Supreme Court of India disclosing restoration of internet communication.
On February 20, the statement said fake news was circulated on Whatsapp group titled “Kashmir Valley” disclosing that a “security forces has killed Jahnagir, Zia Ahmad and Uzair Ahmad in fake encounter”.
“These kinds of posts not only destabilize the social fabric and disturb order in the society, but also escalate militant activities. On the identification of such posts, action under relevant sections of law was initiated and FIRs were registered at various Police Stations and Cyber Police Station of Kashmir Zone, Srinagar respectively.
So far 08 FIRs have been registered against such users in the different Police Stations of Kashmir Zone including Cyber Police Station Kashmir, Srinagar.
According to the statement, six people have been arrested for misusing social media while two have been bailed out.
