Marathwada: 458 farmers' suicides reported between Jan 1 and July 15

Aurangabad: Altogether 458 distressed and panic stricken farmers from the backward Marathwada region allegedly committed suicide between January 1 and July 15, sources from Divisional Commissioner’s office said.

The highest of 104 farmers suicides were reported in drought-prone Beed district while the lowest of 20 suicides cases were reported in Hingoli district.

Of the 458 farmers who had committed suicides, 336 were found eligible for compensation which was paid to the kin of 323 victims by the respective districts administration whereas, claims in 91 cases were rejected following an official inquiry by the respective district administrations and the remaining 31 cases are still pending for inquiry, the report added.

The region has been reeling under severe drought condition for sometime and present dry spell of the rain coupled with mounting of debt are forcing the farmers to take extreme steps.
