Anantnag: The nexus between the doctors and private dealers for surgical items at district hospital Anantnag is badly telling upon the pockets of gullible patients.

The doctors and Para-medics are “strictly” directing the patients to buy the surgical items needed for their surgeries from particular dealers at higher rates.

The latest case of the patient being asked to buy surgical items from a particular dealer ‘Asif Medical Store’ is Misra Banoo from Lal Chowk area of the town.

Misra’s date orthopedic surgery by the doctors was fixed 27/6/2019 (Thursday).

As the patient reached the hospital in the morning, the doctors and theater assistants prepared a list of surgical items needed for her surgery and clearly mentioned the name and phone numbers of “Asif Medical Store” on a paper asking the attendants to buy it from the same dealer.

“As I went to this particular dealer to buy the surgical items it prepared a bill of around Rs 35000. Sensing nexus between the doctors and the surgical dealer I went to another dealer. Much to my surprise the cost of all the surgical items was not more than Rs 22000,” said Majid,  Misra’s nephew.

To save his, Majid finally bought the surgical items from the dealer of his choice.

However, on reaching the hospital, the theater assistants and doctors refused to accept the surgical items bought from another dealer.

“They made lame excuses for not using the items I had purchased from another on much lower rates. They told us that the drill of the hospital used in surgery is not working and that this particular dealer is providing us the drill for conducting surgeries free of cost. If you don’t buy the surgical items from the said dealer we won’t be able to perform surgery of your patient,” Majid told The Kashmir Press.

It was after hours of resistance by the attendants that the doctors agreed to perform the surgery of the patient.

“Since purchasing surgical items from another dealer saved me at least Rs 8000, I clearly refused to buy the surgical items from the dealer in nexus with hospital authorities and asked them that it is your job to arrange the drill. After my resistance, they agreed to conduct the surgery later in the afternoon. They delayed the surgery by hours because I did not buy the surgical items from the dealer they had asked me to,” Majid said.

Hospital sources said doctors and some theater assistants in the garb of defunct drill refer all the patients needing orthopedic surgeries to some particular dealers who virtually peel off their skin.

“These doctors have no mercy for patients who are always helpless. For few thousand rupees they don’t allow a patient to buy the surgical items on their choice,” an insider said adding “this nexus has to be exposed”.

He said the doctors seem to have rendered the drill defunct deliberately to justify their wrongdoing.

Medical Superintendent Dr Mirab told The Kashmir Press that he will inquire into the matter and get back with a response.
