NEW DELHI: External Affairs Minister Dr S. Jaishankar on Monday formally joined the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP).
His formal induction in the party came after the BJP-led NDA government is completing a month in the office as it began its second innings at the Centre following a massive victory in general elections.
At the time of joining the BJP in Parliament House, BJP working president J P Nadda and party general secretaries Kailash Vijayvargiya and Bhupendra Yadav were present.
Dr Jaishankar, former Foreign Secretary who had the longest tenure of three years in office from 2015 to 2018, was handpicked by Prime Minister Narendra Modi to head the External Affairs Minister. His inclusion in the Union Cabinet had come as a surprise to many in political and diplomatic circles. A former envoy of India to the U.S. and China, Dr. Jaishankar also played the role of `crisis manager’ and `trouble shooter’ of the Modi government on a number of occasions during his tenure as the Foreign Secretary.
